On this episode of the MASONRY STRONG Podcast, Blair Harter comes on the set to talk about how he got started in the industry and what keeps him coming back to masonry every day.

Blair's journey into the masonry industry began in an unexpected way. Like many in construction, he didn't set out with masonry in mind. His initial ambition was to become an architect, focusing on drawing, designing, and possibly creating custom homes. However, a summer job at a hardscape supply yard altered his path significantly.

Recalling his experience, Blair said, "I was working at a hardscape supply yard at the time, and it was in the summertime… and then there was an opportunity to work for a block producer." This opportunity became a pivotal moment in Blair's career, steering him toward masonry.

His first major step into the field came with his role at a block producer, where he also became involved with the Masonry Institute of British Columbia (MIBC). It was here, under the guidance of seasoned professionals like engineer Bill McEwen, that Blair delved into the technical intricacies of masonry. Unlike hardscaping, masonry requires attention to aspects such as moisture control, insulation, and air quality—critical factors that distinguish a well-constructed building from a faulty one. Blair reflected, “You’re looking at wall envelopes, and it was like, wow. Hardscaping is a little bit different… in masonry, there’s just a lot to learn.”

From the outset, Blair's work required him to be hands-on. He visited jobsites, mingled with workers laying blocks, and communicated with hog carriers mixing mortar. These experiences offered him a firsthand look at the gritty, fast-paced life in construction. Blair vividly remembers his first job site visit, noting, “You’re wearing boots, you’re getting dirty, and you’re seeing the guys laying block… it’s just this whole operation.”

Blair also emphasized the significance of networking throughout his career. Despite its challenging nature, the masonry industry is populated with supportive individuals and closely-knit communities. Blair's networking efforts led to inspiring stories and valuable lessons from observing others.

For Blair, the appeal of masonry extends beyond the practical aspects. It’s about the industry's evolution and innovation. He’s particularly proud of retrofitting an old block plant in 2018 to incorporate robots, making it one of the first in North America to do so. These robots have enhanced production, accuracy, and safety, underscoring the industry's progressive nature.

Technology's influence in masonry isn’t limited to production. Digital tools have streamlined processes across the board. Digital blueprints, estimating apps, and other technological innovations have revolutionized the way projects are planned and executed.

One of Blair’s motivations for staying in masonry is the variety it offers. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, whether it’s collaborating with architects, working with contractors, or exploring new masonry textures. Blair appreciates that, unlike some careers, masonry offers numerous pathways and possibilities for growth and specialization.

Additionally, the human aspect of masonry plays a crucial role. The industry is largely composed of family-owned businesses, fostering close relationships and a culture of mentorship. Blair cherishes these connections, noting, “Some of the best people I’ve ever met are in this industry, hands down.”

Blair’s story illustrates the unexpected pathways careers can take and highlights the rewarding nature of masonry. For those considering a career in this field, Blair’s journey serves as an inspiring example of the possibilities and fulfillment that can be found within the world of masonry.
