26th Annual KMI Awards

The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's (KMI) Annual Architectural Awards luncheon was held at the University of Louisville's University Club in Louisville, Ky., on April 20.

The KMI Architectural Awards program was developed to recognize excellence in architectural design. Awards were presented to the architect, structural engineer, mason contractor and owner of the winning projects, in each of six categories.

The jury consisted of Paul Muller, AIA, Muller Architects; Michael Schuster, AIA, Michael Schuster Associates; John Isch, AIA, RWA Architects, all of whom are from Cincinnati, Ohio. The jurors met to decide the winners on March 3, 2006.

The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute is a trade association for the promotion of masonry in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. For more information, visit www.kentuckianamasonry.com.

The "M" Honor Award

Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's 26th Annual Architectural Awards

Architect: Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan Inc., Louisville, Ky.
Mason Contractor: Benchmark Masonry
Structural Engineer: Skyhook Engineering

Jury Comments: This project demonstrates exceptional skill on a number of levels. The banding is very effective in creating a visual presence. The entrance arcade is elegantly proportioned and is a restrained, yet monumental, element. The building uses masonry to create architecture.

Brick Award of Honor

Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's 26th Annual Architectural Awards

Architect: Ross-Tarrant Architects, Lexington, Ky.
Mason Contractor: Shaw & Jones Masonry
Structural Engineer: Structural Design Group

Jury Comments: This is a creative and unique use of brick detailing, utilizing masonry in a subtle yet powerful way. The massing and composition of forms are creative and not typical of most of our built environment. The jury thought this was a gutsy use of details for this type of project.
