Brick SouthEast Announces Design with Brick 2005 Award Winners

Seven architectural design firms from North and South Carolina and their building partners were recognized for exceptional skill and creativity in designing with brick at the Design with Brick 2005 awards presentation. The event was held during the American Institute of Architects North Carolina Convention Awards Gala on Saturday, August 6. The winners of the biennial competition, sponsored by Brick SouthEast, were honored at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Va.

The 17 member companies of Brick SouthEast produce more than half of the brick supply in the United States and represent both the largest and smallest brick manufacturers in the world. Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., with a second office in Conyers, Ga., Brick SouthEast is dedicated to the advancement of brick products in the Southeastern United States, providing support for consumer marketing, professional educational programs and industry development. The President's Award

Johnson & Wales University Classroom and Culinary Lab Building, Charlotte, N.C.
Architect: LS3P Associates Ltd., Charlotte, N.C.

The President's Award was earned for LS3P Associates' innovative use of brick in conjunction with other materials. As the first project built on the site, the classroom and culinary lab building defines the edge of the existing open space and uses masonry to blend with existing nearby precast concrete and stucco buildings. The LS3P team used a composition that abstracts the traits of gothic components using brick, clear glass and vertical metal accents. A buff-colored, overscaled brick with a wide color range complements the palette of the existing buildings.

The Clark/Cannon design team won the Honor Award for its design of the second phase of St. Mary Magdalene Church and School in Apex, N.C. Phase 2 featured completion of the 38,000-square-foot school building, which included a gymnasium, small chapel, art and music rooms, and other areas. Judges praised Clark/Cannon's merging of traditional features with timeless architectural trends.

North Carolina School of the Arts Chamber Music Hall, Winston-Salem, N.C.

School administration needed a unified building where public and private spaces could be operationally separate. Red brick was used to relate the 300-seat chamber music hall to the other performance buildings on campus. Light-colored rock-face brick was used as a locator for entry points into the building and major spaces of the building.

The Old Governor's Mansion, Frankfort, Ky.

The Oppermann design team won a Merit Award for its restoration of the Old Governor's Mansion in Frankfort, Ky., which dates back to the Federal Period of 1797. Restoring the mansion required researching the original brick colors, as well as determining the original state of the Flemish bond and limestone-based mortar. Judges applauded the Oppermann team for successfully recapturing the mansion's original 18th-century Federal style.

The Jenkins-Peer Architects design team's objective was to maintain the intimate scale and classic architecture of Converse's existing campus structures. Jenkins-Peer worked closely with Pine Hall Brick Company, Inc. to select a brick that closely mirrored the material used in much earlier campus structures. The result is a classic design that incorporates the rich detailing, timeless quality, and distinguished character of surrounding buildings and the historic campus.

North Carolina State University, Administrative Services III Building, Raleigh, N.C.

This 53,000-square-foot office building was needed to consolidate several administrative departments that were scattered throughout the main campus. Its design is simple in shape and scale, and its large size is broken down through the use of multi-colored brick, special brick shapes and subtle details. The use of brick with deeply set window openings and pilasters serve to anchor the building within the context of the surrounding buildings. Judges were impressed with its "straightforward, modern design, where gimmicks were avoided."

University administration wanted a "100-year" building that could stand the test of time on an academic campus. On the exterior, a concrete structure with a solid brick composite wall achieves a look of permanence and durability, while corbelled brick columns inside the atrium provide a fundamental connection between the exterior of adjacent buildings and the grand lobby space within. Brick is also used inside laboratory spaces, creating a research environment that is warm and innovative.
